Letter to an Unknown Soldier: A Sampling of the Letters

August 8, 2014 Posted by Alyssa College, Fiction & I, Life

buzzfeed

Some of you may be aware that Letter to an Unknown Soldier made it on Buzzfeed. I thought I might take a stab at my own sort of Buzzfeed-style feature. You can read it below the cut.

Over the last month, Letter to an Unknown Soldier has been gathering submissions from the public to create a digital war memorial for WWI. We asked people to write the letter the statue in Paddington Station is reading.

The response was extraordinary!

Some of the letters were funny.

Some were sad.

Some were angry.

Some were horrified.

Some were sorry.

Though the project was targeted at the United Kingdom, letters came from all around the world.

Some came from the USA.

usa

Some came from France.

france

Some came from Egypt.

The letters depicted people of different beliefs—like priests,

priest

and monks,

monk

and Sikhs,

sikhs

and Hindus.

Some letters were true.

Some were fiction.

Some from students.

One from a prime minister.

Some were pictures.

Some were poems.

Some were videos.

Each letter had something unique to say, and each letter was in some way challenging. Why not give them a read, and let yourself be challenged by a war memorial composed of over 21,000 voices?
